Happy New Year!
I feel good exiting this year and going into the new one. I wrote more, I submitted more, have had pieces published and I am proud of all of them.
I came up with my own writing manifesto which I intend to stick to like Gorilla Glue in 2023. (Will post it here later.) I can say that I do plan to write more micros and more Flash and not focus so much on poetry. I am going to exorcize all the demons that I’ve collected, observed, and was born with.
I don’t do top anythings really because everything I love does something different for me. Hits a different soft spot or knot and sometimes even the minute of the day could make a difference. So here are some of the songs/artists that I’ve loved who are not necessarily new as of 2022 but who I’ve discovered or been listening to more and more.
U.S. Girls, 4 American Dollars: Shade tassels, shake your ass We all do what we gotta do to pass In this world where they say: "It's not personal, it's business"
Adia Victoria, Magnolia Blues: I'm going back South Down to Carolina I'm gonna plant myself Under a magnolia I'm gonna let that dirt Do its work
Ghostpoet: Survive it
William Crighton, Priest: I'm gonna run to the mountains Kosciusko and Burrinjuck Let 'em come if they catch up to me I will die in the place I love
Billy Stewart, Summertime (You know the song!)
Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir, Like a Ship (Because sometimes, an unexpected uplift is the best. I love when this song just pops up on my playlist.)
Willis Earl Beal
Moses Sumney, Quarrel
Young Fathers
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Midnight Rider
Fantastic Negrito: An Honest man, The Duffler (Acoustic)
Timber Timbre, Magic Arrow
I mean, I feel like I am in a Western, walking through a seemingly deserted town with barrels pointed at my back from a distance. I can taste the dust and feel the ache that comes from tension. Ha!
Oh, and some horror movies because I LOVE them. Ha!
Smile: Creepy movie let down by the ending.
You Won’t Be Alone: If you didn’t like Under the Skin, you might not like this. As much as I like fast paced horror (see below) I also like slow as molasses, moody, horror as long as it has a good story.
Prey (My favorite Predator movie!)
Scream (I have quibbles, but I enjoyed it. My daughter and I were the only TWO PEOPLE in the theater and when I tell you that created a mood!)
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, and thanks for this list. Like a Ship has kicked off a fantastic morning music session!
