Banana cake is in the oven, Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie dough softening. It is my first morning of silence in a week. Grandbabies and oldest daughter left yesterday and though it was lovely to see them, it is just as lovely to have the hush again.
I am working on a piece that I scribbled out a few days ago for a submissions call whose deadline is tomorrow, but it is for an anthology and the theme called out to me, If You Ever, a collection of poems inspired by Kim Addonizio's "To the Woman Crying Uncontrollably in the Next Stall."
I thought I was in a good place with it yesterday, no two nights ago, until I read the submission call in its entirety, (HA!) and realized I needed to add a few required elements, and then had to incorporate structure into a piece that came organically without losing the authenticity, and I think I succeeded.
When I do my final editing, I record myself reading the piece. It is cool how you can catch the natural breaks, clunkiness, false voice, and correct yourself, and it as needed.
I really hope that this piece is accepted. I rather like the poem and I LOVE Kim Addonizio’s, Ordinary Genius: A Guide for the Poet Within.
So yes, I need to get back to it.
