I meant to write a post about this before but have been putting it off due to sheer laziness. Most times the right word just drops on the page, keeping the flow going. Sometimes lines break just right and there is no need to go back. Other times, after multiple edits and voice edits, I hear a kink in the middle or end of a line. Maybe it’s because it is just not the right word. Maybe it needs to be a syllable short. Then I will consult a Thesaurus I’ve had for decades. It’s a Roget (of course.) I bought it old and it is old. Seventeenth Printing, 1959. It is very particular and what I like most of all that at the bottom of each page, there are quotes that support the words above. For example, for prose:
Prose,—words, in their best order. — Coleridge
or
Error:
What is the use of running when you are on the wrong road. — J. Ray
Ha! Love it.
But most times, I just hop on Google, so I wanted to check my history to see what I’ve been up to and found 29 searches, so here we go:
What is another word for always? For now or sheathe or retract or reminiscing. Another word for step, embellish, unnoticed, passed through, dying, cold, or disregard, disdain, looked at or ahead of?
Today, I’ve worked on two pieces. Been able to find the right words, eventually and stepped away from them. Will be visiting them again tomorrow. Until then, here is another photo or two from when I lived in Sicily.
